difference in number of days between two dates

say a1 value is "7/1/2003"
and b1 value is "7/9/2003"
what formula should in put in c1 so that I can get 8 as the result?

And then format as Number. When dates are involved in a calculation, Excel
automatically formats the result as a date too. In this case, that is not
what you require.
