Differences between similar events that have '2' in their name

Can someone help me understand what the difference is between events when the
have "2" in their name?:

e.g.,
ProjectBeforeTaskDelete Event
ProjectBeforeTaskDelete2 Event

I believe that they are there for cross version compatibility.
The 2 version is usually later.
I don't know how Project handles it internally.
