Different auto filter question

I have a huge spreadsheet with auto filters on each of the columns. On
clicking the auto filter arrows, the list of entries appears as it
should, with view all, custom filter, etc. at the top of the list. Now
the problem. Some of the data entries are very long. This causes the
list to be very wide, so much so that the useful bits (the left hand
edge of the list) are off the screen. This gives the appearance of a
blank list, though I have worked out that it isn't!).

Is there a way to limit the width of the filter list? Do I have to
live with it and reduce the length of the longest entries or change the
order of the columns?

I use Tiger (10.4.3) and Office 2004 with all updates, iBook G4 with
12" screen.

Thanks,

AFAIK, there's no way to change AutoFilter's behavior.

Hmmmm, that's what I suspected. Thanks anyway, though. I just need to
memorise the order of the default entries so I can count down to the
right one!
