Different font sizes in different columns

I want to use a smaller font size in the first column of a
table (for explanation in parenthesis). However, doing so
throws off the alignment from columns to the right which
have a larger font.

Is there a solution to this problem?

If this is Word 97 or above, you might try changing the vertical alignment
to Center or Bottom. Or, if there are multiple lines of text in each cell,
set the line spacing to an exact amount for both columns.
