Different header every page

For a book-length document I'm working on, I don't use headers. I
keep all repeating information and page numbering in the footer.

I would like to use the header space for a different purpose.
Specifically, for "______ cont'd." when and if it's necessary.

The only way I know of doing this is to insert a section break
whenever I want this to happen, but that is very cumbersome,
especially after rewrites.

Is it possible to tell Word that the header for each and every page is
unique by default?

Thanks in advance,
