Different Office issue after recent updates

S

Schelly

My computers running Office XP won't open files from Windows Sharepoint
Services sites (Internet Explorer window- click on file name drop down
box-->Edit in Microsoft XXXX (word/excel, etc)) regardless of OS
My computers running Office2003 are still working fine.

It is not freezing up - but I get a message " 'Edit Document' requires a
Windows Sharepoint Service-compatible application and Microsoft Internet
Explorer 5.0 or greater"

we have all of the above and were working no troubles until the updates...

This update may or may not be causing some problems for you -Problems in Windows
Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015

Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution

using a Nvidia video card? Check for updated drivers.

Do you have Kerio Personal Firewall, if so make sure you read the article
carefully: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

If you uninstall the update make sure you read the section titled "Workaround
for Windows shell vulnerability" under Vulnerability Details:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-015.mspx

Also you'll need to check Automatic Updates and make sure that the update isn't

Thanks, for your response...I am new to posting

I should have mentioned I have spent considerable time investigating this
and have read all those articles - none of them relate to my situation
unfortunately. I have laptops, desktops, different brands, regardless of OS
(XP or 2000) It seems specific to OfficeXP - IE6 - WSS2003.

Further to that - I followed the steps in KB?? and deregistered/reregistered
OWssupp.dll on 2 pcs - now if i try to 'edit document' IE encounters an error
and closes. Any suggestions for this one?

Have you looked at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833714/en-us
You receive an "'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint
Services-compatible application" error message when you try to edit an Office
document in a document library

If this problem occurred because of recent updates, which update caused the
problem?
On one of the computer affected the only thing I can suggest is that you remove
the updates that were recently installed that created the problem, after
removing the updates, does the problem still occurr? Next install one of the
updates, has the problem re-occurred, do this until you narrow down which update
may have caused the problem.

yes, that was the article I mentioned - having tried Method 3 on two
computers, I now seem to be in a worse position with IE quitting with an
error...

re: Method 1/2: I hadn't tried to install the Sharepoint Support component,
assuming since we had been successfully using WSS with the same setup for
months now...but I will give it a try, thanks

firther to that...I updated the Sharepoint support component but it hasn't
helped.

I also tried re-registering the .dll and , fortunately, i am not getting the
"IE encountered an error and needs to close" message - back to the original
"'Edit Document' require a WSS-compatible application..." error message.

I will try your suggestion of uninstalling the updates .... thanks again

Well at least we know it wasn't the updates.

Perhaps it's time to consult MS Support on this one -

Perhaps it's time to consult MS Support on this one -
How to obtain assistance from MS Support

Does the support solve the Problem?

We have the same Problem on different machines.

But it is definitly a client problem, because if the user logs on to an
working workstation with his username everything works fine.

I set up an Vmware Windows XP client with a fresh Office XP
Installation. Everything is working fine. I saved the office Setting on
a client which has the problem and imported them on the Vmware machine,
but everything works perfectly. So it seems it arent' the office
settings.

Some users said the problem comes up after wsus-updates come in, but
which update would make this trouble?

I searched with google for the error message but everything is pointing
to the MS-KB Article mentioned above. Buth nothing from the solutions
worked for us.

I'd really like to know why the problem occours.

The exact same thing happened to me today all of a sudden, i.e. when
selecting "Edit in Microsoft Office Word" in a Sharepoint Word document,
I got the following error message:

" 'Edit Document' requires a Windows Sharepoint Service-compatible
application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater"

I searched the Internet and stumbled upon this particular site and its
relevent postings. Although a solution was never found, it did save me a
lot of time upfront.

Half a hour later, I found the solution to my problem: for some reason,
one of the Add-Ons in my IE7 called "SharePointOpenDocuments" was
disabled by some operations (still don't know what) which caused this
problem.

To fix this problem, I did the following:
(1) In IE7, select Tools/Manage Add-ons/Enable or Disable Add-ons...
(2) Under "Show:", select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet
Explorer"
(3) Scroll down to locate the entry "SharePointOpenDocuments"
(4) Under "Settings", select "Enable" and then click OK

My hardware/software configurations are:
- Dell Precision M70 laptop
- Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3 (Version 5.1.2600
Service Pack 3 Build 2600)
- Internet Explorer Version 7.0.5730.11
- Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003 (MS Office Word 2003
(11.8227.8221) SP3

There are probably many other things that will result in this problem
but if you ever run into this issue, add the above to your list of
things to try and may be it will solve your problem as well.

I registered in this forum just to post this thread to pay my debt to
the internet community. It will certainly take me a hell of a lot longer
to figure this one out if it wasn't for those who shared their knowledge
before me.
