Difficulties opening documents... sorta

Word 2003
Windows XP Home

If I use the My Documents shortcut and open a document, it works fine.
If I open up word, click on the "Open" button and then click on the
downpointing arrow to see the folder structure then word hangs for 30
seconds before showing the folders.

Suggestions?
