Word 2003 ships configured to only run signed macros. is
there anywhere I can get somthing to sign my macros,
based on my goodwill and benevolence (read free)?
Everywhere I check, you give them some money and they
give you a cirtificate. Can you get a free one that will
sign macros?

Yes, find a copy of selfcert.exe on your computer if you have done a full
install of Office. Run that, and you will be able to create your own
certificate. Office can be persuaded to accept selfcert-signed projects.
