Any pen device which Windows interprets as a mouse, will work in OneNote.

However, OneNote will not be able to perform handwriting recognition nor
search/index your "handwriting". OneNote will treat anything you write
with this device as a picture only.

Handwriting recognition and searching/indexing is currently only supported
when OneNote is run on a Tablet PC.

I've enabled handwriting input in the Office XP Shared Features. This causes
the Windows Language Bar to appear when running any of the Office apps,
including OneNote. If, with my mouse, I use the handwriting function from
the Language Bar in OneNote, One Note interprets the mouse writing and turns
it into text. This seems like the next best thing to having a Tablet PC.

I know that the approach I'm describing is not the same as digital ink, but
I believe that if I use a digitizing pen (perhaps the I-Pen?
www.fingersystemusa.net) or a digitizing tablet (e.g. Wacom), I can achieve
almost the same result as using a Tablet PC. Using the technique I've
described, the input will be converted into typed text, whereas using a
Tablet PC, the input remains as handwriting.

"Close" Nancy but that's about all. Without a Tablet PC, OneNote does not
use the Tablet's handwriting recognition engine, which is truly digital in
that it samples the input strokes at up to 133 times per second, or more
than three times that of external input.

Whatever you use externally would be an "emulation" of the way a Tablet PC
works, and not the real thing. OneNote's handwriting recognition and
searching/indexing, as Erik points out, is not supported from other devices.

Chris,

"Close" may meet my needs just fine. :) For my use, it's not important
whether OneNote will be able to recognize, search, or index handwriting. If
the handwriting gets converted to searchable text, that will work for me. I
realize that it's not quite as efficient or versatile as the Tablet PC
capabilities, but I'm not ready yet for a tablet. I'm looking for an interim
solution, even if it's not perfect.

The problem is anything you "write" will be recognized as a picture, and
nothing more. If you're not on a Tablet PC, then you cannot have the Ink
input nor the other functions available with an external device. OneNote
treats it as a graphic, so you won't be able to edit or change the input.
You'd really be better off just typing.

That's not the result I'm seeing. What I'm "writing" with the mouse is being
converted to text automatically in OneNote. As I said a few messages
up-thread, I've enabled handwriting input in the Office XP Shared Features.
Having done that, I can use the Windows Language Bar Writing Pad, "write"
using my mouse, and OneNote turns it into text and inserts it in the note as
typed text. (By the way, the feature works the same way in Word.)

So I'm assuming (and I recognize the danger there) that if I can use
Language Bar Writing Pad successfully with a mouse, it will also work with a
digitizing pen. I realize that this approach does not have all the
functionality of digital ink as implemented in the Tablet PC OS.
