Dimenion Lines

Mario

Hi,

I'm in the process of entering the layout of my house into Visio in
preparation for some renovations.

I'd like to add dimension lines in feet and inches similar to
architectual plans.
I can do this by creating a line, adding arrows etc...

....but the problem is that lines created this way do not resise
automatically with the drawing. Meaning that if I make a square bigger
for example then I would have to move, extend and re-measure the
dimension lines.

Any suggestions?

thanks.

What version of Visio are you using? I just tested this in Visio 2002 Pro
and, as long as I used "glue to geometry" on the dimensions lines, they
changed value dynamically with the object to which they were attatched.

An excellent "General Dimensioning" stencil came with pre-MS Visio 4.1
Technical. Its stencils - including custom stencils - are fully compatible
with later versions of MS Visio. Why MS discontinued the Technical features
is beyond me.

Not sure of the legal position with M$ regarding sending the stencil to
you - it's only about 140kB.

I still run pre-MS Visio Technical 4.1; in some functions - notably graphics
filters - I have found it far superior to the MS versions. Another feature
of Visio 2k that drives me nuts is the default new drawing is in those
bloody idiotic "INCH" things, whatever they are (only joking - I know what
they are; it's just that in Australia we thankfully gave inches, pounds, etc
the boot thirty years ago. It always intrigues me that the Americans
persist with the Imperial system of measurement, having given the Empire the
boot over 200 years ago).

The content of Visio Technical has been rolled into Visio Professional.

If you have a copy of VT 4.1 there is no problem using it. Giving it to
someone else may be
a problem. (Wait until after I leave the room ;-) )

You can change your settings to use metric. Actually, "Bloody Inches" is the
English setting.

Are you hinting that the Americans just do not "measure" up? ;-)

Canada switched a long time ago, but I still think imperial. One of the
"excuses" used against metrification was that both Canada and the US used
dollars per gallon. Of course, the US dollar was not equivalent to the Cdn
dollar and the US gallon is smaller than the Imperial gallon.

Yes John - but it doesn't "stick". I have my own template in mm that I
invoke for a "blank drawing". The default "New" is always those inch
thingies.

My first post here a couple of years back (when I first got V2k) was to ask
where the default "New" drawing stencil is kept. No answer, so I presumed
it is embedded. V2002 was OK in that regard.

(Happy Visio user since Tech 4.1 - still using 4.1 as indicated earlier. I
use 2k routinely; wasted money on V2002 - can't recall what annoyed me so
much about it that I ripped it off after a few days and reinstalled V2k.
Might reinstall V2002 and remind myself what caused my use at the time of
traditional Aussie epithets ...)
