With the affected document displayed, choose Command + a to select the whole
thing, then use Tools>Language to change to a language you DO have (e.g.
English UK).
All text in a Word document is marked with a "language". Unless you specify
differently, it's the language specified in your Normal style. Unless you
changed that, it's the default language with which you installed the
operating system
Text can be marked with only ONE language, so when you change it, you change
to a different language for everything in your selection.
The only time you would notice his is if you were using multiple languages
within a document, to do things such as mark French quotes as being in the
French language, or pieces of Computer Coding to be "Do not check spelling"
(No Proofing).
If you have a complex document in which that has been done, or you think it
might have been, make a copy of it and try the simple method above first.
If it does no damage, you've done the job. If you get a sudden attack of
measles all over the document, then use Find/Replace to make the change on
the other copy.
1) Go to the Edit menu and choose the Replace function.
2) Click the Find tab and drop down the blue arrow.
3) In the Format box choose Language.
4) In the Language box, choose Irish
5) Click the Replace tab, then choose Format>Language and the language you
want to change to.
6) Make sure that both the Find and Replace boxes have nothing else in them
at all, then click "Replace All".
That will change the language only for pieces of text that were marked with
Irish language.
Hope this helps
In an earlier post it was stated that the text was set to irish
(ireland) language by direct formatting and that this was an 'unknown
language' in Word :Mac.
It was suggested that the direct formatting language setting be
removed to solve the issue of the unknown language. I have tried to
find out where to do this, but to no avail.
My question now is how do I do this, where do I do it and what are the
consequences of removing it and also does it just refer to the unknown
language?
I refer to the earlier post Microsoft Word for mac 2004
