direct link to server allows overwrite of data being sharred

There is an Access DB on a shared server.
Permissions allow for sharing.
IF people go to the shared server and folder and then open the DB all works
as designed -- multiple users simultaneously use and update their individual
parts.
IF they link directly to the data base from their desk top that simultaneous
use does not happen and data is lost.

Is there a fix?

Is it possible that they are left-clicking & dragging the file to their
desktops (and thus getting a COPY of the database) instead of right-clicking,
dragging, and clicking Create Shortcut (thus getting a SHORTCUT to the live
copy on the server)?
