Directly Edit Mht Files WYSIWYG

J

John Olbert

I do a lot of reading and reseach on the Internet. I like to save a
particular site using the IExplorer "save to Mht file" functionality. You can
edit a Mht file in Word but it comes up in a very complex manner. I have
tried a number of other editors but have yet to find one that allows you to
edit the saved file in a "What You See Is What You Get" manner.

Could you suggest any products (Microsoft or other) that will allow openning
and editing Mht files, showing them the same way they would appear in
IExplorer?

Though it would be useful to edit all components of the saved Mht (i.e., the
pictures) I can live with just annotating and adding to the text.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Instead of saving to .Mht file, have you tried saving as favorites and
making the pages available offline? You can then read thiese anywhere
you want without being on Internet.

You can do this by clicking on Favorites, Add, Make available Offline,
Custmize, Next, [select yes if you want links to be saved and change the
number as appropriate], Next etc etc. this should give you an idea.

Altenative is to use MS Publisher as it can certainly save as .Mht to
exploit the benefits of IE.

What I need to do is to edit the saved Mht page. I want to underline text,
add comments , etc. I tried the Office Publisher but again, the page comes up
as a jumble of components.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi John,

Without having any information on a particular page example of the issue, or your intended use of the material, open copyrighted, of
the material you're gathering from other websites. from your description my guess is that the issue may not be in Word or Publisher
but in the webpages you're visiting using layout techniques and elements (include scripts and controls) that are not supported in
the MS Office basic products.

MS Office Frontpage, the web page editing product in the Office product line may be able to work with more features than those of
webpages not produced from MS Office apps, or you may want to try the trial edition of the new MS Web Designer software

The MHT file format is basically a zipped collection of all of the pieces that would other wise be stored in a folder and supporting
folder if you stored the HTML format. It's a format that is very memory and processor intensive when 'unpacking' the single file
contents back to their original state then opening them.

There is software that will produce basically a 'snapshot' of a website and let you add annotations to your picture of the site.

I'm looking for software like that - freeware if possible. Not to make a
screenshot (I know how to do that;-D), but something that takes a snapshot of
the entire webpage from top to bottom. Any ideas? Would be very welcome;-)

Sarah.

Hi Sarah,

You may want to try the trial version of http://snagit.com (~$40)
or http://endicosoft.com/webpagecapture.php which has a freeware version and an upgraded (~$15) upgrade feature version

You can also from your browser print the webpage to a free PDF printer such as
http://tinypdf.com, http://primopdf.com or http://cutepdf.com or in MS Office 2003 or 2007 you can use the included MS Office
Document Image Writer to print it to a graphic file.

There's a better solution at http://roohit.com for FREE

They allow you to highlight the parts that you want, and e-mail your
highlights to anyone so they too can see the highlights.

The roohit highlighter tool, also takes a snapshot of the page and
archives it for you. You can even see the highlights at a shinyurl e.g.
http://shinyurl.com/WarSux

Please do not click on any of the links in this message.

They are masked and you have no idea where you are going, especially links
to "shinyurl" rather than "tinyurl" which I also avoid like the plague.
