Disable French spelling and Thesaurus update?

P

Protech

Need a way to disable updates that aren't needed and will never be used, such
as the French spelling and Thesaurus? XP update allows this, why not Office?
Can't the update check to see if the bilingual option is installed before
promting. It's another 6Mb I don't need taking up space on my hard drive.

French, English and Spanish spelling checking is installed by default on all
North American copies of Office. There is a flaw in the French spell
checker that is potentially exploitable, whether you use it or not. Just
take the update and go on with your life. 6mb is a pittance in today's
reality of 250 gig hard drives.

Yes... But I have explicitly chosen to not install any of the
non-English proofing tools, so there is no flaw there to be exploited.
Yet, I still have four items in my required update list that I have to
ignore.

Umm... ok. I truly hope you're not a software developer. Has it ever
occurred to you that the reason hardware manufacturers are pushing for
the 1 terabyte limit is that developers are using this flawed logic as
an excuse to ship bloatware?

Besides, with mobility being the flavor of the month, storage footprint
should still a priority for software houses. Notebooks, tablets, etc.
still ship with quite small hard discs - usually in the 30 to 60 gig range.

Sorry, but have you forgotten whose product you're dealing with? For all
that it offers, bloat and holes are part of the package. You are the
beta tester, whether you realize it or not. MS does have a modest
facility for interoperation, but there are penalties, as you have just
seen. Big prices due to all the 'features', good, bad or indifferent.
DCOM that noone in his right mind leaves on or needs, raw socket access
etc. Unfortunately you have to do the update; it's the price you pay for
all the 'convenience'.

Hi Bob,

You may want to try Microsoft Update, that combines
Office and Windows update services to see if you get
the same result. It has the ability to mark updates
to not be displayed.
