Disable Office Xp registry key - prompting for cd

E

efreardon

I need to disable the registry key that prompts a user to
point to the Office Xp cd when installing a office xp
service pack. I plan on deploying the patch to several
users and did not want them to be prompted to point to the
office cd.

Does anyone know where I make that change in the registry?

Also, does anyone know where that change is for OFfice
2000 as well?

Thank you.

Hi, efreardon,

But...the patch requires the original source CD. Do you not have the
original installation media?

Hi Susan:

What I am trying to do is create a software package that
installs the office service pack to 500 or so users.
During the installation of the patch-- it requires the
media. I have the media but was thinking of deploying a
regedit to 500 users (blocking the prompt for a cd) then
deploying the patch to the users so they don't see the
installation and aren't asked questions that require a
response.

Thanks.

I'm sad to say that I don't know the answer, but I think the question you're
asking is best described as:

"How can I specify a network share as the Installation Source Media location
on an existing client PC which had Office installed from a CD"

Hi, Elizabeth,

Well, suppressing the prompt isn't going to negate the requirement for the
original installation media. This article helps explain why the media is
required:

828451 - OFFXP: Why Service Packs, Updates, and Security Patches May Require
the Office XP CD-ROM:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828451&Product=ofw

However, you might try full file patching, as described in that article:

"If the source is remote, you can use full-file patches to update the client
without requiring access to the source. For more information about the use
of full-file patches, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/journ/fullfile.htm"

I know it's probably "too little, too late", but the Office Resource Kit has
great information about deployment methods (in enterprise situations) that
make it easier to manage patching. For instance, you can install everyone
from a network administrative installation point, then use an administrative
patch on the network installation point and then automate the workstation
patching from there.

Hope that helps--
