disable printing

I would like to disable people to take print outs of a word document.can

This isn't possible. If they can read it, they can print it.

Convert it to a PDF file using Acrobat or a work alike and set the
disable print option.

FWIW this can easily be by-passed by inserting the contents of the
protected document in to a blank document.

Use PDF or Word 2003.

You can create macros to intercept the Print commands however macros
can easily be by-passed.

You can use Information Rights Management (IRM) in Word 2003 which
allows you to define who can open a document, print, copy, etc. For
users who do not have Word 2003 they can download a Rights Management
add-in to access the document.
