Disable Quartz text smoothing in Office 2004

In Office X it was under Preferences > General > Enable Quartz text
smoothing. I unchecked that box and enjoyed sharp fonts. In Office
2004 that option no longer appears and my text is smudgy. How can I
disable it?

Office 2004 is now a better Mac citizen - it takes smoothing preferences
from the System preferences. You can disable it there.

While Word2004 may or may not be a better Mac citizen. In OSX.3.4 you can not turn
off smoothing. you have 4 choices of Standard, Light, medium, and heavy and you can
choose the point at which smoothing has the most affect.

You'll be much better off locating two Haxies one is called Appearance Enhancer; and
the other called "Silk" you have to pay $10.00 for "Silk", but its worth the money.

With the use of Silk you are reminded of the days when you had installed Adobe Type
Manager. Type look almost as if your looking as crisp as type written pages using a
dasy wheel type Typewriter.

(Oh how I miss the days of Quickdraw and ATM.)

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

I don't think it was any different in 10.3.0 - 10.3.3, was it? Maybe the
range has been extended. You can turn off smoothing for sizes 12 and below
if you wish. Do you find sizes 14 and above blurry? Is there any point size
at which that's no longer true? What's your screen resolution, and what type
of monitor do you have?

It looks absolutely frightful on my 23" flat monitor with 1920 x 1200
resolution when I turn off smoothing for size 12 and less. I'm set to 12
Verdana for email here in Entourage: the type is spindly - diagonal lines
and curves appearing as discrete pixels at times, and lost of characters
shoved into each other. Exactly the same in Word. I think this must depend a
lot on screen resolution, monitor, as well as personal preference. I've got
to do turn smoothing back on before I get dizzier and get a headache. At the
very high screen resolution I have, smoothing looks good and reasonably
crisp while non-smoothing is really hard to look at. I'm sure at lower
resolutions it's very different.

Good to know. Does it look different at lower levels (12 and below) to
turning off smoothing in System Prefs, or is it only at larger sizes that
the same effect persists?

I installed Silk but either it can't "fix" Word04's font smoothing or I don't
have the proper configuration. My Sys Prefs>Appearance is set for
Standard, I'm on a flat-panel Planar 1280x1024 and it looks best to me
there. Photoshop reminds me whenever I change the Turn Off Font
Smoothing for anything other than 8 and smaller so I leave that alone.

I was hoping Silk would be able to, I don't know, override Word04. Man I
miss that little box to uncheck for Enabling Quartz text smoothing.... Guess
I'll stick with Word X SR1.
