disabling auto formatting (default)

The help feature tells me that in order to disable auto numbering I need to
go to 'Format' - 'bullets and numbering' - 'customize' - then 'reset.' but
when I go to format-bullets and numbering, the buttons for 'customize' and
'reset' are not functioning. ??? This is really driving me nuts and I don't
know where to turn. Help would be most welcome.

If you are talking about the type of formatting where you are happily typing
along and then Word starts adding some numbers, disable that under Tools |
AutoCorrect, AutoFormat as You Type. You probably want to turn some other
stuff off as well.

I suspect if you haven't manually applied bullets/numbers and selected them,
those buttons you mention aren't going to work....
