Disabling "check grammar as you type" not possible. Any ideas?

Hi!

I tried to browse the net, but I wasn't able to find anyone with same
symptoms as my mac. I would like to disable "check grammar as you
type" option from Word preferences, but it simply isn't possible. The
text is grayed (as is the entire "Grammar" section of the "Spelling
and Grammar" page of the preferences), the check box is checked, and
it cannot be unchecked. Also the "check grammar with spelling" option
is checked, and - like everything else in the grammar section of the
spelling and grammar page - grayed. The Spelling section can be edited
normally.

Would anyone have any ideas how to fix this? My word is Word 2004 for
Mac, and my Mac is iBook with Os X 10.3.7.

One cause could be that you are typing in a language for which Word 2004
does not have grammar proofing tools, e.g., Dutch. Is it actually checking
grammar as you type? Do you get green underlines if you make deliberate
mistakes?

To see what language you are typing in, go to Tools | Language. Even if you
are typing in English, the text might be tagged as another language in
Word's mechanics, in which case the red and green underlines are probably so
plentiful as to drive you crazy.
