Disabling the auto-check-for-mail feature in outlook 2000

Anyone know of a way to disable the function that causes Outllok to automatically check for mail every time it's opened. It's a bit bothersome to pop open outlook to reference a saved note or e-mail, only to be locked into waitng for all the mail accounts to be checked and all the rules and sorts run... before I can get to something I need right away. I;d rather have it where I have to hit "send/recive" if I want to check for mail.

In Outlook 2003: Tools, Options, Mail Setup tab and click the Send/Receive
button. Clear the check box for checking mail every N minutes. With this box
check Outlook does a Send/Receive when opens and then again every N minutes.

In older versions of Outlook you need to set options not to Send/Receive
every N minutes. However, I recall that the setting location differs from
Outlook 2003. If you cannot find the setting in older versions, check
Outlook Help.
