Disabling Word 2003 Task Panes

We have recently converted to Word 2003 and the taskpanes that keep
popping up are an absolute pane that you have to keep closing.

Is there a way to turn these task panes off. So many extra button
clicks that are so annoying.

ie. Mailmerge task pane that asks you to go through several steps
whenever a document with mailmerge fields opens up. All we need is to
have the mailmerge toolbar appear and to click the merge button.

Is there a registery hack to stop them appearing or some other method?
