Disappearance of ¥ from the currency format pulldown menu

When I went to format a cell to use the ¥ symbol for the Chinese RMB rather
than the $, something that I've been doing for years, it and the symbol for
the Japanese Yen were gone from the pulldown currency symbol menu! What I
found instead were symbols that I hadn't seen for years: CNY for Chinese New
Yuan and JPY for Japanese Yen.
..
When I went to an old spreadsheet on which I had used the pulldown symbol
and clicked on a cell showing ¥400,000, it bypassed the pulldown currency
menu altogether and went directly to Custom and showed: [$Â¥-804]#,##0.
..
So something happened, but I can't reverse the change unless I know what
happened?

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Sounds as if the country setting in control panel, regional settings has been
changed?

Hi Jan,

Thanks for your quick reply. I am set to the following time, regional and
language options:

-- Time zone - China -- Language Standard -- English (US)
-- Location -- China (had been in United States, switched it to China and
rebooted)
-- Installed language input -- English (US) , Chinese (PRC) and Chinese
(Taiwan)

Still no Chinese yuan symbol or Japanese Yen (which, btw, I think Microsoft
may have intentionally reversed. One has one one line across the Y, while the
other has two lines. I don't recall which was which.)

In any event, getting back my yuan currency symbol doesn't seem as simple as
changing country of location.

Any more suggestions? The only other thing that I can think of that may have
affected this was a trojan that froze up my computer last Friday and
disappeared on Sunday after installation of five newly downloaded MS updates.
Might either the trojan or the antidote have stripped out a piece of an
earlier update to Excel? My MSOffice license stretches all the wazy back
through upgrades to Office 97.

Thanks,

Chuck
