Disappeared Autoupdate

Greetings-

I recently installed Office 2004, after having XP and the 2004 test drive;
now, for some reason the Autoupdate facility has disappeared; when I try to
use it, it says "Microsoft Autoupdate could not be found on your system.
Would you like to install it now?"; when I click yes it says "There was an error
installing Microsoft Autoupdate".

I think I may be responsible for this after a bit of over-zealous disk cleaning
-- I removed some MS update program from the Applications folder,
thinking if was old -- but why won't the installer put it back?

That's a good question. I don't see it listed on the Install CD anywhere
(visible or invisible). When the installer is run, it is not listed under
any of the install options/components. It must get added automatically under
initial installation?

Have you tried a full re-install to see if this is the case?

Yes, this seemed like the obvious solution... but it doesn't work -- I tried
running the Remove Office program, got rid of everything I could, but to no
avail. Ack!

any other ideas?
