Disappearing contents in a Word 2k3 document

This is happening when a Word document is saved to a WSS document library (no
one has answer this question there yet so I am wondering if it is a Word
issue):

A contirbutor saves a Word 2003 document to a document library (versioning
on).
It seems other users (3 tested so far) see the template used to create
the document and the data saved with the template the first time. Any changes
made afterwards only show when the originator opens the document. If other
users open the doument from the same library do not show any changes made
after the initial upload. IRM is not turned on. Library metadata show the new
save date but none of the changes can be seen.

Is this a Word issue or an WSS issue> Any help would be appreciated.
