Disappearing cursor in Word 08

J

JBB

I'm experiencing a problem with the cursor in Word. Occasionally when I mouse over to some new part of a document and click to start typing, the normal flashing cursor disappears. It fails to reappear even after I start typing. Needless to say, it's frustrating to not know where the cursor is.

More details. This is working with a .doc file in compatibility mode. Problem seems to exist with both standard Apple mouse and my usual mouse, Evoluent's Vertical mouse.

Any MS engineer readers, please fix! Otherwise, a great product. (I'm amazed by how much more responsive other apps seem now that I'm running Office 08. Clearly 04 was hogging lots of resources). Thanks!

I have the same problem. In compatibility mode, and my cursor is invisible.

I also have a problem where the word window jumps from one workspace to another in Spaces.

Hi Cliff,
Sorry for the trouble. So far I haven¹t been able to reproduce the
disappearing cursor issue.

Does it occur all of the time or under certain circumstances when in
compatibility mode? Factors could include zoom level, document contents, and
certain views. Does any action bring back the cursor?

If you have a document that exhibits this problem consistently please send
it to me.

The issues with Spaces are known and we are working with Apple to remedy
them.

Thanks,

Curt

Cliff & JBB -

I've not been able to cause the insertion point behavior either.

It would also be helpful to know what specific Mac system configs you have &
what specific OS X versions you're running.

Sorry: Since you changed the subject, you have broken the link with your
earlier post, so now we have a dump of your config that we can't relate to
any other items.

Please post it again as a reply to your earlier thread, without making any
change to the Subject line.

Cheers

I have the same problem. In compatibility mode, and my cursor is invisible..
I also have a problem where the word window jumps from one workspace to another in Spaces.

Hi, I have the same problem, except I am NOT running in compatibility
mode... at least i don't think so. My docs are all .docx, and i start
them from scratch.

All Word settings are default except:
1. i am showing the formatting toolbar
2. i have changed the gallery to 10 % transparency

The Problem:
When I am typing documents usually 3 to 5 page summaries, the cursor/
insertion point disappears. This happens 1 to 5 times during the
day. When this happens, i can type, but the cursor doesn't show. I'll
either click around page, or just wait, for what seems like a random
amount of clicks/time, before it shows up again. I so far have not
identified any specific trigger for the problem... but i'll keep
looking for it.

When this happens, I am almost always running all of the following
programs simultaneously:
Safari or Camino (it's happened with both)
Adium
Entourage 2008
Quicktime

Let me know if there is anything else i can do. Thanks.

Below are my system configs:

One thing i just realized/noticed.

i go back and forth between programs frequently. usually, either from
viewing quicktime movies or viewing web pages. the problem just
happened to me again after i went back to word from looking at a
website.

i was surfing the web, and then clicked the word icon in the dock to
bring up word. when word came up, the cursor was not visible. i
clicked another window and then the word window, and still no help. i
clicked another window again, and then clicked the word icon in the
dock, and the cursor was back.

i also noticed that the cursor disappears (understandably) when i
switch over to viewing my quicktime movies. perhaps there is something
with word where it doesn't fully recognize that it is active again...
although maybe that doesn't make sense, since you can still type with
no problem.

One last thing: like Cliff, I also have Spaces running,.. just fyi.

Same problem here, Bob. I only installed Office 2008 yesterday, so not
an awful lot of experience with this version, yet 20+ years of
experience with MS Office. Right now I am working on an 18 pages
document with many text tables. Placing the insertion point somewhere
in the table makes it disappear more than 50% of the time. Quite
annoying when you do not know where the text entered will appear.

My system:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B02
SMC Version: 1.16f8
Serial Number: W873701XX92
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

System Software Overview:

System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.1 (9B18)
Kernel Version: Darwin 9.1.0
Boot Volume: MacBook Pro HD
Boot Mode: Normal

Hope that helps,
Wladimir

Also... like Wladamir, I notice the problem more when i am working
with tables.

forgot to add my OS info:

Kernel Version: Darwin 9.1.0
Boot Mode: Normal
Time since boot: 22:11
