I am using OS X 10.3.9 with Word 2004. I went into the spelling and
grammar section, and clicked options. typically there is a custom
dictionary that you can select, when you use this dictionary, it
apparently adds new words ot the dictionary database in Word. thus you
can program the dictionary to learn new words that it didn't know
existed before. anyway. for some reason, the custom dictionary
stopped working and i went into the above menu and deleted it, hoping
that it would reset itself. now its gone and the only way to set it
back is to create a new custom file. but Word insists that you decide
where to store this file. I have no idea where this new custom
dictionary file needs to be saved in. even so, i'm not even sure if i
should be making a new dictionary...isn't there a way just to restore
the original custom dictionary? i looked thru the above help document
but could not find anything that i could use. does anyone have any
other suggestions? thank you very much.

To create a custom dictionary in the first place, you must have saved it
somewhere? If you remember where, you should be able to get it back by
clicking Add in the dialog you mention and navigating to it. Relevant Help
topic: " Add an existing custom dictionary" Removing it in that dialog
should not have deleted it from your harddrive.

It does not appear that you have to keep your custom dictionary in a certain
place. I keep mine in username/library/preferences/microsoft/ because I
back that folder up regularly anyhow, but I think you can pick a place so
long as you tell Word where it is by activating it in that dialog.

Ok, i've gone ahead to create a file under your suggestion and it seems
to be working great. thank you very much daiya!
