Disappearing email - Outlook 2003 / XP

V

I am having a problem with disappearing emails in my Outlook inbox
after a new install of XP PRO ( with SP2) and Outlook 2003 (Service
pack 1)

I had problems connecting with my ISP, that was resolved by Bellsouth
with some configuration settings, but they are unable to help with
this email problem.

If I send/receive, I can see various emails come up in the inbox, and
as more messages download, the earliest messages start disappearing,
one by one, until ALL are gone.

They don't go into the deleted folders or spam folders.

I tried turning off the XP's built in popup blocker, as well as
disabling all the MCAfee firewall and security software.

I checked the "rules" for Outlook, I have none listed.

An additional problem exists, not sure if the two are connected; but
when I attemp to get webmail from my company's site, I keep getting
the usernam/password box after putting in my correct info.

I know it's something in my system, since I can access email from
another computer when getting the webmail from my company.

Any thoughts on what else I can check into for this problem?

I have spent many hours changing various settings with no luck so far.

ALso tried accessing the mail (POP3 thru Bellsouth) thru a copy of
Outlook Express, it acts the same.
