Disappearing files

T

Trilby

I have a MAC OS X. Sometimes when I work on a file, then copy it to my
memory stick, the file disappears. But there will appear something
called a "Work File," with some numbers and letters accompanying that
title. When I click on that, that disappears.

I have clicked on the lists of files, but the one I was working on is
not listed. Searches also yield nothing. Anyone know what's going on
here? Thanks.

I've had a few problems copying any type of file to USB memory sticks
(external memory disks) in PC format. Thus I never try to save a file
to a memory stick - instead I save it to the hard disk (Macintosh HD)
and then copy it to the memory stick.

If copying a Word file from the hard disk to memory stick is causing
problems, you may wish first try to close the file in Word and then
even possibly quitting Word before copying because :

- A work file is used with an open document and and is deleted when
the document is closed, although the Mac OS is sometimes slow in
removing its icon. Thus it appears the file still exists for some time
after it is deleted. If you click on the icon of the non existent file,
the OS is forced to update the window and the icon disappears.

- The presence of the Work file icon on the memory disk suggests the
OS is getting confused what file to copy. Closing the document before
copying will rid the work file and thus at least it can't be copied to
the memory stick.›
