disappearing footer in word 2002

I'm editing a long Word doc created and edited several times by other
people in my office. When I view it on my machine it has an entirely
different header and is missing the footer that other people see
(which included page numbering).

When I try to edit the footer (view headers/footers, click on 'switch
between header and footer') I can't, it simply won't create or display
a footer on any page. Attempting to insert page numbers from the
Insert menu also fails. I get no messages or warnings, it just doesn't
work.

I'm working in Word 2002, and have opened the document both off the
network and have had it emailed directly to me from a single computer.

How can I tell if the headers/footers are the only thing wrong without
having someone print out this 51-page document and comparing it to
what I have by hand?

Anyone experienced anything like this? Help?

Hi,

Is the document locked or protected for forms? Are you using the same
printer driver as the others? (Not the same printer, the same driver file,
generally a product of which operating system you are using)

I take it that you can edit the header. Try scrolling down when in the
header. You should be able to see the footer this way.

BTW: Never use Insert => Page Number. Put page numbers in using the
header/footer toolbar.

Charles,
thanks for your help. I'm using Windows 2000 and Word 2002, but the
last person who modified the document uses Windows XP. The person
before that is across the country, I'm not sure if she uses 2000 or
XP. So we could have different setups.

There are no forms or subdocuments in the doc, and it does not appear
to be locked. Is there a way to tell for sure? It could have been
created from a master document, which is a can of worms I haven't
opened. I'll have to wait until next week to ask the creator.

I tried scrolling down while editing the header, but that just keeps
jumping me to the header on the next page. All normal ways of getting
to the footer are disabled.

I've never seen anything like this.

I suspect a corrupt document. One way of corrupting a document is to send it
as an email attachment (without first zipping it). This doesn't usually
happen, but can. Check on the MVP FAQ for info on dealing with document
corruption.

You can tell if a document is protected for forms by attempting to view the
headers and footers. That you can edit the headers tells me this is not the
case. Also check under your Tools menu and see if the command to Protect
Document is there; if it is, the document isn't protected.
