Disappearing Macros!

H

howland

I am using Word 2004 for Mac on an iBook G4. About 6 months ago all my
recorded macros "disappeared". I re-recorded them, uggh. This week
they again "disappeared". I would be most grateful if anyone has a
suggestion. Thanks.

All your macros are stored in Normal template, if you haven't change
the storage place. Normal template is prone to be corrupted, so it is
usally good idea to backup it. Different people from this group has
differnt workflow how to deal with templates, some ignores normal
template at all (they are obsessed and delete it every time they use
Word:). I personally do not care about Normal, I just backup it - all
my macros store there.

Normal template is located in home/Documents/microsoft user data
some reading about normal template corruption
http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

Now, I need to catch my bus, hope this will help :)

then on my way home, I have just realized, could you possibly by
accidence stored your macro into that certain document rather than
Normal? You can verify that you will open that document which was open
when you re-created macros and see if the macros aren't store there
rather than in NOrmal template. IF not, i would incline to the Normal
corruption which I described in my previous post. But keep swinging
around for the other opinions.

Ummm... that would be me. <g>

However, I'm hardly obsessed - a couple of years ago it took about a
minute to write an Automator workflow that deleted the Normal template
before launching Word, and I haven't spent a second on it since...

I've also never had a corrupt Normal template, or a corrupt global
template (where I store my macros), in that time!

Also the deleting the Normal Template, and storing the Macros and styles
are stored a bit of an oxymoron? Your styles, macros are store in Normal
but then normal is wiped out before you ever use it?? :-/

No - that's the point: there are no styles (other than the built-in
ones) or macros stored in my Normal template.

I never use Normal as a Document Template, so there's no need to store
user styles there.

All my macros are stored in document or global templates, so there's
never a need to store any in Normal.

So nothing of any consequence is ever stored in Normal on my system.
Therefore blowing it away once or twice a day just produces a fresh
scratchpad.

No oxymoron at all.

Where/What is the global template. is the same as a template you design
and save into my templates??

I have MANY global templates - one for startup (which configures my
toolbars, menus, shortcuts, etc.), one for window manipulation (that
uses events to give me a consistent size, view, and zoom for every
document), one that reconfigures the Work menu, one that reconfigures my
custom style toolbar for each document template, one that contains my
replacement macros for built-in commands, one that contains VB5 macros
for VB6 functions, one for my user macros, etc., etc.

All of them (or, via Automator, any particular subset of them) go in my
Alternate Startup Folder.
