Disappearing metafiles

Using Word 97 with service release 2

We paste charts in as metafile. Now they are disappearing
on some user's machines. We have about 12 metafiles and
only one of them (randomly different each time)
disappears. It is still there in that you can click on it
and see that there is something there but it is blank.

The picture placeholder option under Tools Options is NOT
checked.

Any ideas?
