disappearing template

In Word XP/2002, I have a main template that provides user menus to access
macros stored in intermittently-loaded templates. It is stored in C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup. It shares this space with the
DocsOpen (aka, PCDocs) document management system template. This path is set
within Word’s tools, options, locations tab as the startup location.

My problem is this: this setup works perfectly in other offices using other
types of document management systems. So, my problem is with the DocsOpen
integration.

When certain macros are run, my main template becomes uninstalled. Even if
the user goes into Templates and Add-Ins and “reattaches†the main template,
the macros won’t run. In addition, the normal template is ticked off and
requires the user to exit both Word and the DocsOpen integration. In
addition, the user’s access to perform just a regular save (or even save as)
from Word’s file menu is grayed out.

Here’s an even bigger kicker: this problem seems to occur more on laptops
than desktops. Although, there is one desktop that is having the problem.

ANY ideas out there?!!!!!!!

Thanks.

I've cross-posted this to the Add-Ins group because it seems more
appropriate. Remainder of my remarks follow your post.

I am a beginner here. Just tossing out thoughts that come to mind.

Usually there are _two_ startup folders for Word. One is the one listed
under the Tools > Options > Files Locations directory. The other is the
Office startup folder. The Office startup folder is not the preferred
placement. It is intended for Office-wide Add-Ins and it is _not_ one of the
trusted locations for macro security. This second attribute may be a cause
of your problems.

Setting them to be the same folder may or may not cause problems. I don't
know, but I wouldn't do it unless I had a reason. It might even cause
Add-Ins to load twice.

You should probably be discussing this with the DocsOpen developers since
their application seems to be interfering with yours.

Thanks, Charles. I appreciate all of your help, especially posting for me in
the add-ins location.

As far as the startup folder, DocsOpen requires it to be set to the
Office10\startup folder. All of my other add-ins, in other offices, work
just fine in this location. Also, I have noticed that placing the add-in in
the documents and settings\username.... startup folder will cause the
template to load more than once if there are multiple user profiles on the
machine.

Regarding DocsOpen support, they charge $500 an hour, as my client does not
have a maintenance contract with them.

Any other ideas?

Putting it in the Word startup folder doesn't cause it to load more than
once even if there are multiple users on a machine. Putting it in both
folders does. Word loads items from the Office startup folder and from the
Word startup folder. Again, templates loaded from the Office startup folder
are not vetted by macro security. I suggest that you try putting your
template in the Word startup folder and making sure that these are two
separate folders.

As for OpenDocs, perhaps there is a newsgroup or forum. If OpenDocs is
causing problems with the way Word works, that isn't an issue for
maintenance, it is a product defect. Adobe has been getting away with it for
years (but may have fixed their problems finally).

Thanks, Charles.

I guess I'm confused by what you mean by the Word startup folder and the
Office startup folder.

Would you please provide me with path samples? Thanks.

The default path to the Word startup folder is

c:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup

The default path to the Office startup folder is

c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office##\Startup

where ## will depend upon the version of Office 10 for XP, 11 for 2003.

You can use a different folder for the Word startup folder by modifying the
path under Tools>Options>File Locations. Though it is probably not
recommended as it would not then be a "trusted" location.

Thanks for clarifying that for me, Doug. That's what I thought.

When you change the Word startup folder to a custom location it is still a
trusted location. Am I mistaken?

Designating the Office startup folder as the Word startup folder gives it
the trusted attribute. I don't know what other problems it might cause.
Perhaps none, perhaps the problems zkid is experiencing. I've not seen it
done or tried it.

In sort of an asnwer to your question, Charles.... Document management
programs, as far as I know, all require macro security to be set to low. The
exception is for Office 2003 (and I assume from here on). Macro security can
be set to Medium for that.

Anyway, I thought I would let everyone know what finally worked for this
problem, just in case:

I had to separate the two templates (document management and mine). I left
mine in the office startup folder: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office##\Startup

(## depends on the version of Office version (2000 = "", XP = 10, 2003 = 11
- I think 97 is in the same location as 2000, just Office with no number)

I moved the document management program template to the Word startup folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

I then pointed Word's location setup (tools, options, file locations,
startup) to the Word startup folder (see above).

Everything seems to be working fine now (knock on wood). Apparently,
DocsOpen does not like to share it's folder space with other templates. Out
of all of the document management systems that my template works with, I've
never encountered this type of behavior.

Thanks to Charles and Doug for your feedback - it helped me figure this out.
