disappearing text

We have been having problems with Word making lines of
text temporarily disappear just below a page break, even
though they are still in the document. Originally, we
thought it was only happening when we did a conversion. We
have sinced found out that it is happening in new
documents. The only way we have been able to solve this is
to copy text ONLY, leaving out the paragraph markers.
Which in the case of a very short doc it doesn't take too
long, but the majority of the time these docs are huge and
doing it this way is very time consuming. Does anyone know
of a way to fix this problem? Is it possible that there is
a patch out there we haven't heard about?

Thanks,

Cara

Cara,

have you tried printing the documents out and seeing if
the text is in the hard-copy. If it is it sounds like the
problem is with the refresh rate on your monitor as
opposed to a problem with the document itself.

Russ,

The document does print out correctly and I have already
tried increasing the refresh rate of the monitor as well
as increasing the size of the virtual memory on my
computer. Any other suggestions?

If this is Word 2002, see "WD2002: Text May Be Missing When You View a Word
Document in Different Views or When You Scroll the Document" at

Thanks Suzanne, that is exactly what I am looking for.
However, I am a little confused because according to the
documentation you are supposed to download a hotfix before
you update the registry but there isn't a link to download
anything. Do you happen to know where to find the hotfix?

Thanks,

Cara

Hotfixes are available only from Microsoft (see the URL in the article for a
page that gives contact info). You actually have to place a support call and
let a PSS rep determine that you need the hotfix. You will not be charged
for the call provided it is determined that you need the hotfix (and
provided that you are careful not to ask about anything else!). It's a PITA,
but that's the way it has to be done because, as the standard boilerplate
says, hotfixes have not been extensively tested. It's sort of like drug
trials. If your migraines are bad enough, you may be willing to take part in
a pharmaceutical manufacturer's drug trial to test a promising new drug, but
this drug won't be available on the general market (even by prescription)
until it's been thoroughly tested. Once MS has tested the hotfix on enough
different systems to be sure it's safe and effective, it will be rolled into
a service pack, so users who don't need it desperately are urged to wait for
the SP.

Cara,

there are a number of options/possible solutions:

1) upgrade the hardware: more memory, better graphics card
and/or monitor (not ideal but if the equipment can't do
the job...)

2) For large documents I assume you've got graphics and
the like, the way they are inserted can make a difference:
I managed to skim a 17.5 MB document down to 1.3 MB just
by cutting out (Ctrl+X) the bmp graphic and pasting as
a 'Picture' (Edit/Paste Special).

3)Go to Tools\Options\View (tab)and:
- deselect Drawings
- select 'Picture Placeholders' (once the image is
inserted you don't need to actually view it)
- select field codes (to display embedded objects a line
of text - the field code itself)

Hopefully a combination of these will free up some memory
to enable your document to display correctly.
