Disappearing Toolbars in Word 2008 for Mac

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Whenever I open Word a new document window appears onscreen, but the standard formatting toolbars have disappear, even though still checked under View/Toolbars. I have to uncheck the two toolbars I want (standard and formatting), then re-check them to get them to show up for that document. I save my work and exit Word properly, then the next time I start up it is the same drill all over again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Forgot to mention about the above problem, I just updated my to version 12.1.3 of Word and it did not make a difference, therefore the post.

See the oblong button at the right end of the Title Bar? - Click It, & thank
Apple for the nondescript, undocumented collapse button :)

Once you've expanded the bars & saved a document the setting should "stick".

I'm so glad this question was answered! This has been driving me nuts!

Many many thanks for this advice, I would never have guessed that the tiny oblong button was the solution, and I couldn't find an answer in the help files. Surely this should be addressed by Apple/ Microsoft in an update somehow?

Thank you. I thought I was going crazy when my word toolbars disappeared.

Thanks for this post. It's been driving me crazy too, but I was not smart enough to check this forum earlier. YAY!!
