I have tested in both 2003 and in 2007, moving a subgroup of positions
around multiple times (about 10-12 times for each shape) randomly. So far
I can't see the problem you are seeing. I started as you did, with an
Excel worksheet to generate the drawing (using the in-box sample data
file).
In addition to random moves, I've hidden subordinates, moved the manager,
then re-displayed the subs, with no problems. I've combined random moves
with re-layout adjustments as well. I've also turned off Automation
events, moved things around, and re-enable it; then I saved the drawing on
one system (2007) and opened it on another (2003) and performed essentially
the same combinations of random moves and layout options. Nothing has been
lost in the drawing, and all connections are maintained through each action.
Just so you know, there is no 'correct' layout order in the solution. The
wizard explicitly randomizes order when creating each subordinate grouping,
so that behavior is normal.
You mentioned testing in both versions of Visio - do you have them
installed on the same workstation or on different ones? It shouldn't
matter if they are installed together, but I can test that configuration to
see what happens. Also, if you are testing on only one system, do you have
another system with Visio installed to compare against? Can you share some
specs about your system (OS version / SP, Office version / SP, virtual or
physical machine, CPU/Memory/etc.). And, one question I should ask - has
this ever worked for you before?

I run Visio 2003, but also tried it on Visio 2007 and it happens in both
versions. The connectors dissapear after creating a new org chart drawing
using the org chart wizzard and an excel file. The boxes are never is the
correct order after the wizard, so when I move the boxes around, and after
a
few moves, the dynamic connectors start disappearing. When I add a new
connector, then move another box, that new connector dissapears too.
It is crazy.

This isn't an issue I'm aware of. What version of Visio are you using, and
can you give some more info about how you see this occur? Also, is it
happening in existing drawings, or can you create the problem in a new
drawing from scratch? If you can recreate it. please share the steps so
that I can investigate.
BTW, the Visio Organization Chart solution depends on Automation heavily.
Check to be sure that "Enable Automation Events" is checked under Tools >
Options > Advanced. If you try moving shapes in a solution such as the Org
Chart while the Automation Engine is not running, strange things can occur.

When moving shapes around in an Org Chart, how come the dynamic connectors
start diappearing? Is there a threshold in Visio as to how many times you
can move shapes?
