You don't have to use a subweb for the discussion web, but you
definitely should.
Using a subweb enables you to apply a theme to the subweb without
affecting any part of the main web. The subweb also provides a means of
publishing the main website without overwriting the discussion web and
deleting the posts therein. If there are a lot of posts, when
publishing the web you would have to say "Do not delete" to each and
every post in the discussion web unless you use a subweb. If you Publish
using "All Pages" - this will not delete any pages or posts, but will
overwrite some pages that should not be overwritten, such as the
discussion web Table of Contents.
If you do use a subweb, make sure you do NOT publish "including
subwebs".

I'm not using a subweb for the DW (do I have to or should I be?). Is there a
way to do it on the main web?
Thanks,
Rob

DW post pages are generated by the server so you can't format anything in the page before they are created
- to format the DW text, apply a FP theme to your DW subweb
