First, I would create a new sub web for it (ex: discussion) by creating a
folder then right-clicking on it and choosing convert to web. By putting it
in a sub web you don't have to worry about it getting corrupted when you
publish your root web. Just mark the sub web as Do Not Publish.

After you create the sub web you'll see it turn to an icon with a little
globe. Double click to open it. Then choose File, New, More Web Site
templates, Discussion Web Site Wizard.

Is there any way to password protect a discussion web such as
this, but leave the rest of the site open to public viewing? I
tried, twice, to set up a discussion web and both times had it
swamped with junk and advertisements that were not related to the
purpose for the discussion web, at all. Gordon

Yes. When you create the sub web, open it and go to Tools, Server, Security
and set Unique Permissions from the root. You must do this from your "live"
site (not one on your local PC) Your Web Host may or may not give you access
to this so you may have to ask them to do it for you.
