Discussion server

What is discussion server.
I am new to Sharepoint portal services but want to do document discussions,
i am told I need a discussion server, searching around the web reveals that
back in office 2000 such a feature existed in the office server extensions.
But what about in 2005, with office 2k3, windows 2k3, and sharepoint portal
2k3??

as MS Office Sharepoint Team Services) or MS Office Sharepoint portal
