Disk full trying to save!

C

chocolatemandan

Just writing a short 1.5 page document in compatibility mode, and suddenly cannot save because it tells me:
"the disk is full trying to write to "DiskName(my user account name). Free some space on this drive, or save the document to another disk. Try one or more of the following: Close any unneded documents, programs, and windows. Save the document to another disk. (OK button)"

It is also telling me it cannot make an auto recover save as well.

My user account is in Filevault, but it is self expanding. I closed all other apps, and I only had this one document open in word. I tried saving it to the shared user folder, but no go. I also tried to save it to an empty USB drive and again, it said that drive was full and it could not save!

I have just tried saving in .docx format, and it saved to both locations fine. So this is clearly something wrong with .doc format.

Any idea what is going on and how to prevent this? In my office I have to remain compatible with others using older versions of office on windows.

Hi chocolatemandan,
Did you by chance run any of the example Automator scripts from the Scripts
menu and are you running a pre 10.4.11 version of Tiger?

If so, upgrading to 10.4.11 will remedy this problem.

Thanks,

Curt

Hi Curt,

AM RUNNING 10.4.11 with all the latest updates, and I also make sure permissions are correct. And no, I have not run any automator scripts.

So, there is something else causing this.

Thanks

Good Morning -

Although there could be more at issue, Curt's pretty much on the nose with
the OS X update point :) Please know that I'm not contradicting or
questioning you in any way, but simply pointing out that there is a
possibility that if you updated OSX via Apple's Software Update it may not
have applied as well as you might think. This has been an ongoing issue with
Apple updates.

I'd suggest you consider re-applying the 10.4.11 update using the Combo
Update for your type of Mac available from the Apple website:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/index1.html

Repair permissions after doing so, Shut Down & restart your Mac and see if
the problem persists.

Hi Bob,

sorry, that was not me intentionally shouting, but me working on my PC rather than my mac and accidentally pressing caps lock ;-)

I always download the combo updates and install from those. I also always repair permisions before updating and after. I may try this again, but I am trying to solve a more pressing issue with Entourage failing to update my exchange inbox (as you can follow in the entourage forum).

Thanks
Dan

I've recommended the following and it cured a strange problem for
another user:

Look for a Utility called *applejack*, down load and install.

Now quit everything and go into Single User mode Command-S

You'll be dumped into an ancient looking Black and white screen Black
background white text.

after ll the code zips by and a command prompt (blinking cursor) appears
type : applejack and then hit return

now a numbered menu appears follow the test exactly by the numbers in
exact order.

Be patient some of the test take a while.

in two of the commands you check and repair system items first. Then you
will be asked do you want to check users, answer yes then you should see
how to type command. something like /Users/yourusername (what ever your
user name is). hit return. it will remove various cache files, and other
files depending upon the feature.

Also one of the commands remove virtual Ram files, the files the
computers write to computer when swapping info from RAM to hard Drive.

anyway run all the test. when finished have computer to restart by
applejacks instructions.

Now wait, the first time you see it you may actually get scared but the
Blue screen will stay up for a while, as well as when it goes to gray
start up screen and then to your back ground, the little start up clock
winder will go round and round possibly for several minutes.

What is happening is new cache file directories as well the system
scratch disk files will be rebuilt from scratch also Font caches will be
built from Ground up.

After everything settles down and boots up then open word and see what
happens.

Also if you have never done this before, you'll notice for a little
while everything will be a little snappier and not as sluggish. those VM
or Scratch disk files the system uses are supposed to be removed by the
system but don't and they take up valuable real estate.

What Applejack is, is a user friendly user interface to UNIX commands.
Unix Commands can be powerful tools but unless you are a UNIX (weenie
meant in the best of terms) you can do major destruction of files and
your hard drive even down to what you use to be able to on Dos Computer
with the wrong use of INIT command you make your hard drive an expensive
door stop. AppleJack allows you to only use the UNIX files you need to
use and keeps you hidden away from danger.

Also, use of Single User mode and applejack allows for a much deeper
fixing of permissions and disk repairs because it put a small version of
the OS in to RAM. so your not having to access the drive in order to run
the commands.

This is a Word issue, not a Mac OS issue as I've seen it happen on 3 computers here at the office, as well as my Mom's iMac G5.

Well, it is not "usually" a Word issue.

It is "usually" the folder permissions settings in OS X that cause this.

OS X requires the logged-in user-ID to have permission to the folder. Word
needs read/write AND "remove".

There is a bug in Office 2008's installer that sets the user ID to 502 if it
is running as an Administrative install across the network.

The local user is normally logged in as 501.

However, assuming that the disk really is "not" full, you can get this to
work. It works here, on this Mac. But you have to get your permissions
straight.

Did you read Phillip's post?

Find the Utility "applejack".
Install it.
restart in single user mode.
(Command-S).
wait for cursor to appear.

Type: applejack.

menu will come up follow steps as shown.

a couple of task you have run for system and the user.
to do for user /Users/username (where user name is what name you give
your computer user name. /Users/dicktracy.

If you have never done this make take a long time to complete.

Also after you finish all task and restart your computer will take a
long time to start up. even Blue screen may show for a minute or so.
