I have a Toshiba M400 tablet PC running Windows Vista Enterprise x64 and
Office 2007 Enterprise. I use the Hibernate function rather than shutting
down the laptop so Outlook is essentially running continuously.
A couple of months ago I switched from a Toshiba M200 tablet running Vista
and Office 2007 (Windows XP and Office 2007 B2TR prior to that) which I had
not had any significant problems with, however after a few days use of the
new laptop Outlook suddenly wouldn't render properly on the screen;
right-clicking on the taskbar button or system tray icon wouldn't display
the context menu, and although I could sometimes minimise/maximise/restore
it didn't make any difference to the display. The problem now reoccurs
approximately every three or four days. Closing Outlook and reopening is
sufficient to resolve the symptoms, but it's a little annoying to have to do
this particularly if you have a couple of Draft e-mails open at the time.
I don't really know how to describe the problem other than to say it's
basically just display corruption - showing blank white space, maybe a
little text or the occasional button, partial elements of the column
structure, most recently I noticed the message body in the preview pane
changed when selecting a different message but the header did not and
double-clicking on the message then corrupted the entire display.
Initially I thought the problem was memory related as I was waiting on
additional RAM to take the machine from 1GB to 4GB but the extra memory
hasn't made any difference. I also have a 2GB SD card running for ReadyBoost
but it doesn't seem to matter whether this is used or not. I've tried
turning off all the new display features such as Aero Glass but that hasn't
made any difference either. There are no clues to the problem (or even
evidence the problem occurred) in the Event Logs or Outlook's own diagnostic
logs.
I don't have any addins installed and the system doesn not appear to be
running out of memory; the problem can occur regardless of how much memory
the OUTLOOK.EXE process is using. It's also not simply a matter of waiting
for the display to render - while I did leave it for 10 minutes once and
come back to discover Outlook would restore correctly this was an isolated
occurrence. There is generally not any associated CPU activity when the
problem occurs, nor any particular usage that will produce it - it could
happen switching between the Inbox and Calendar, restoring Outlook from a
minimised state, sending a new message, or even simpy changing between
messages.
I am running the latest BIOS on the M400 and have updated the display
drivers twice now (using the driver from the Intel site for the 945GM
Express chipset as the Toshiba site only appears to offer a 32-bit version).
I have had no other display problems with this machine including with any of
the other Office applications, although admittedly I typically don't leave
them running continuously for anywhere near as long as Outlook.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there anything else I can try?
I haven't been able to find any mention of it in the newsgroups or on the
web but that could just be that I'm not using the right key words.
Appreciate any suggestions people can offer.
Thanks,
