Display oddities - is it Word or my PC?

B

Bert Coules

I'm experiencing two display oddities:

1. Frequently, a typed letter does not immediately come up on the screen.
My impression (which could well be wrong) is that this especially happens at
the end of lines, when the leter in question has been followed by a Return.
It can take up to several seconds for the letter to appear.

2. This is much less common. Sometimes, when looking at an existing
document, an entire line of text appears with the tops of the letters
missing. Moving to the next, or previous, page and then back again usually
cures the problem.

Are these known oddities of Word, or should I be looking to my computer? I
don't experience any display problems in other programs.

I'm running Word 2000 under Windows ME on a P4 PC with 256Mb RAM.

Many thanks.

The second problem is almost certainly screen driver related, which suggests
the first problem may be also. See if there is a driver update available. If
not, you may be able to effect an improvement by reducing the hardware
graphics acceleration.

These are classic symptoms of a graphics driver conflict. Word is
exceptionally hard on both the graphics and printer drivers. First, go to
the support site for the graphics card and get the latest driver and
install. There's a possibility it may be the printer driver, so do the same
for that just to make sure.

Graham,

driver related, which suggests the first problem
may be also. See if there is a driver update available.

Many thanks for that advice. I've just downloaded and installed the latest
driver for my display card (ATI Radeo 9000). It's too soon to say
definitely that it's done the trick, but in the few tests I've run so far
I've seen no problems at all.
