Display of GIFs in Powerpoint

I'm having trouble with transparent GIF files in Powerpoint 2004 Mac....

They display just fine on initial import, but then when the file is
re-opened, the GIFs look like they're corrupted. GIF files that I've been
using for years are affected, as are ones newly created in Photoshop.

Barring a fix, is there another file type which supports transparency better
than GIF in Powerpoint?

Thanks for any help.

PNG is a 24bit graphics format that does support transparency (GIF is only
an 8bit format). I have successfully used PNG in PowerPoint (from a graphic
created in PhotoShop).

Only in 2001 or 2004 though. PPT X has nasty issues with PNG and especially
with transparency support,
