display specified significant digits

Can Excel be told to display "n" significant digits
automatically, without formatting each cell manually.

For example, a column of 4 numbers formatted to 3 sig.
digits:

1.234567 would format to 1.23
..0234321 would format to .0234
123.023 would format to 123.
23.123456789 would format to 23.1

No, not automatically. But you can use a helper column:

=ROUND(A1,2-INT(LOG(A1)))

will give the value in cell A1 to 3 significant digits.
