Displaying graphics in a shared border...

D

dwhitejazz

The graphics I am using in a shared border display when working locally or in
Preview mode, but not on the server. I have tried repeatedly saving the image
in my image folder and re-saving then re-associating the image with the
shared border (and saving up to the server), but still no luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi. I'm having the same problem, that's why I came here to look for answers.
It's very frustrating.
Hope someone can help.

What's the URL so we can take a look?

2 things to look for:

1. Check in Code View and make sure your links aren't pointing to your hard
drive (ex:file:///) If they are then import them into your web first and
then insert them.

2. Make all the image file names lower case and then make sure your links
are all lower case. The server may be case-sensitive depending on whether
or not it's a Unix/Linux/Apache or Windows Server. Your PC is running
Windows, which is not case sensitive, so you'll always see them if that's
the issue.

Does it have something to do with needing to apply a theme to use one of the
link bar styles? I had chosed the style of mine from right clicking on the
shared border area, going to the style option and selected one of those.
Then I was looking around last night and found that they are what would be
used in that theme, if I was using the Satin theme.
Not sure if the other David is using one of these styled link bars.
If you are, maybe we can only use that style of link bar if we use that
style of theme?

In this situation, open the remote site in FrontPage and apply the nav
bar style there. If the local site is disc based the style does not
publish correctly. Note: requires FP2002 extensions on the server.

The link bar styles are associated with themes, but the theme does not
have to be applied to the site or pages. If the theme is applied to the
site or page, then the link bars will publish without problems.

Thanks for that info Ron.
2 things if you don't mind - I noticed this morning the _borders folder
contains buttons I was playing with before I selected the one listed under
the links style, I guess I saved them without utilizing them. However, the
links style I chose is listed under _themes.
I've never made changes remotely.
I just looked at info on how to do it.
I opened the default page, selected View Remote Website.
Then selected _borders. I don't know if it was because I double-clicked from
the left that the same items appeared on the right, whereas when I opened the
right initially it was blank.
Anyway, I wonder if I need to move or copy the Satin files from the _themes
folder to the _borders one for it to work as the _borders folder currently
only contains graphics I'm not using (but kept there in case I might at some
point)?
Sorry to sound so basic.
Suz.

No. There is no need to move any files from _themes.
When you apply a style to a FP navigation bar the appropriate theme is
placed in the _themes folder, and buttons are created in the _derived
folder - there should not be any buttons in _borders unless you are
using them for something else, any there have nothing to do with
FrontPage navigation or themes.

When you publish from the local site everything will fall into the
correct places.

R, Hope you can bear with me through this.
Re: "open the remote site in FrontPage and apply the nav
bar style there." .... How do you actually apply them please?
Also, I think when I opened the View Remote Site this morning and
double-clicked on the index, it opened. Now it's not opening - any idea why,
should it open?

Also, on checking the Broken Hyperlinks, it said my links bar theme Satin
links are broken. Not sure if this is because I need to apply the style from
the remote site, or because of another reason.
S.

R

Ronx

You need to apply the style. Open the remote web, then open a page that
has the link bar.
Right click on the link bar and choose Link Bar Properties.
Click the Style tab
Choose the Satin style
Click OK

If you double click on a page it should open - what error do you get?

Just some more direction if you don't mind.
I've been reading up on Remote View and think I need to set the Properties
but don't know what choice I should make here.
Should I select the option to save the Remote under my actual web name, or
the one with the local path to my site in the hard-drive, or even keep it in
a separate folder?
Sorry but I don't want to save in the wrong place then have an error to have
to find and go back and rectify.
Looking forward to trying your solution when I get this straightened out.
Thanks again,
Suz.

The local site is always the site you first opened in FrontPage, usually
the site on your hard drive. The remote site is the other one you are
going to publish to, or the site on the right in Remote Site View,
usually the one the general public will see - your actual web name.

To sort your link bars out, you definitely need to open the site under
your web name.

Sorry, I didn't see the line "what error do I get". I don't get an error, it
just doesn't open from there ie. the list on the right.
I opened the Remote Site I thought from the links down at the bottom left.
Then I made a couple of minor changes to a page and went to publish, it's
still telling me to Set the Remote Site under the Properties tab. However,
when I enter the website name www.suzgoldphoto.com, nothing happens when I
enter ok. Same as when I went to enter that previously as the remote site.
I'm not supposed to choose a folder name within my hard-drive to store it to?
Sorry but so much appreciate all the help.
Suz.

R

Ronx

If you have the remote site open, and choose publish from there, then
things get confusing...
The remote site is now the local site, and you need to set up properties
for publishing to your hard drive. Use the folder on your hard drive
that holds the local copy of the website.

If you make the same changes on the local site, then there is no need to
publish from the remote site.
