you can use a field code for displaying the word count. To
insert, click your cursor in location where you want the
word count to appear and press Ctrl F9 to insert field
braces, then type DOCPROPERTY "Words" between them so
that it looks like:

{DOCPROPERTY "Words"}

right-click the field and update it.
