dissertation disaster due to a mistaken command

Help!
In fumbling around trying to mark headings for a table of contents, I was
following directions that said to push
ALT+SHIFT+0 (or maybe it was o)
now, all my documents in the computer have the paragraph symbol beside every
line. Yes, every document I have ever saved in my documents. There seem to be
some dots too.
What do I do to undo this mess?

Signed,

I use Word 2007 and there's a Paragraph symbol on the top to hide/show the.
If I hover over top of it, it says CTRL + * is the shortcut, but I cannot
get this to work
..
My Operations Manager here at work accidentally hits something on her
keyboard by mistake once every few months and can never remember how to fix.

Now that you've turned off your non-printing characters, you should learn
what they are and why you *should* use them.
