Distribution Groups and envelope icon

My system (Office XP) was all workin g perfectly until
two weeks ago when I was accessing my email from a remote
location. Since that time, I no longer receive the
envelope icon to advise of incoming mail (the option is
turned on) and my distributiuon lists don't work. Any
email sent to a distribution group fails. Even selcting
the members of the group 'longhand' also fails.

Any ideas?
