DLL that controls vectorial graphics in Windows and Office

V

Vicent Giner

I want to report and old problem I have with Windows XP Professional +
Office 2003 (genuine versions, and all SP and official updates
installed).

This is my problem:

* Word crashes when viewing a document with and equation in it, or any
other kind of vectorial graphic.

* Visio crashes wen opening it.

* Windows is unable to perform a preview of EMF files or other
vectorial files, when exploring my files.

* Also, PowerPoint doesn't work properly: it "hangs" when I start it,
and some minutes later, sometimes it responds.

I could include a longer explanation here, but, anyway --which Windows/
Office DLLs could be related to this problem??

I also tried to un-install, re-install, etc. Office, but the problem
remains. In fact, I'm not sure it is an Office problem, but a problem
with a corrupted Windows DLL.

I think it should be possible to "replace" the corrupted DLL by a
"good" version (my colleagues have also the same version of Windows XP
in their PCs). Do you think it is a good idea?

What do you recommend me?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Sorry for my English.

Hi Vincent,

It could be a problem with the your graphics card driver being corrupted or out of date. You may want to check the card
manufacturer's website to start.

It could also be a corrupted Windows GDI+ (Graphic driver interface)installation. This can sometimes come from the damaged graphic
card driver and sometimes from an app putting in a non-matched GDI DLL file.

Hello, and thank you for your answer.

I think it is a software problem, but I will check the first option
too.

In case the problem comes from an application putting a non-matched
GDI DLL file,

1) How can I check or detect it?
2) How can I solve it?
3) Which is/are the name(s) of the damaged or corrupted file(s)?

If I posted here the typical "error information" that Office products
provide when one of these errors happen, would it help in any sense?

Another piece of information that could help: the problem has gone
worse since I installed the SP3 for Office 2003, Visio 2003 --I mean,
after updating Office 2003 with ALL the available updates, Word is
crashing now. Before, it didn't crash, but only worked slowly when
managing equations or figures, vectorial images, etc.

So, apart from checking my graphic card provider, can I post here any
other relevant information that could help to detect and fix the
error?

Thank you in advance.

So, would it be a good idea to look for "gdi.dll" and related files,
and replace them from another computer with the same installation than
mine??

I am not sure it is good, but... what do you think? What files should
I replace??

Thank you in advance.

Hi Vincent,

If you've reinstalled or updated your printer and graphics card drivers to current versions and restarted the PC and eliminated any
add-ins to Office being the issue I'd suggest check with the folks in the Windows discussion group before manually replacing any
particular DLL or DLL set at that point.
