DNS Wiz reliable?

Uncle Meat

I'm having major problems with either FP 2002 or my host provider (GoDaddy).
I'm really having a lot of trouble tracking down what or who is responsible
for my inability to transfer only a few files at a time before my connection
craps out.

A forum user pointed me to this little tool
(http://www.dnswiz.com/fptype.htm) that supposedly queries a website to
determine if FP extensions are installed. When I point it at my web site it
returns the following:

WWW Site: www.kilmer-family.com
Port: 80
Server Software: Microsoft-IIS/6.0
FrontPage Extensions: NO

GoDaddy tech support states the extesions are installed and installed
correctly. I have the ability through the GoDaddy control panel to install,
re-install, or uninstall the FP extensions for my hosting account. I've
deleted, installed, re-installed, unitstalled and then installed from scratch
the FP extensions a dozen times or more and this tool still reports they
aren't installed! Does this tool work correctly for any of you?

How can I tell FOR SURE the FP extension are not only installed, but
installed correctly and are compatible with FP 2002?

According to http://www.kilmer-family.com/_vti_inf.html
- your site has the FP 2002 SE installed
That doesn't mean they are installed correctly or you don't have a permissions problem
Open your online site in FP and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks
- then if GoDaddy allows it try Tools Server Admin and run a Health check from the FP SE

Have your host check / change / increase the server time out settings for your account.

Also, check with your ISP and see if they limit port outbound port 80 traffic from their
subscribers.

GoDaddy claims they have NO TIME-OUT settings at all! IOW's it's set to
infinity. I've been throiugh 3 levels of their tech support and they all
claim no time-out is set anywhere in their hosting server configs.

I was able to run the Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks on my live website. Even
though many of the files still have yet to be uploaded I received no errors
or warnings from FP.

I was also able to run Tools > Server > Admin and ran a Health check from
the FP SE. It responded with:

Web Name: http://www.kilmer-family.com

Verify existence of webs No problems in this area.

Check roles configuration No problems in this area.

Tighten security WEB: "/" Your Web site security may need
to be tightened. To tighten security as much as possible for your Web sites,
select "Fix this problem." Note: This message will re-appear even after your
security is tightened.

Check anonymous access No problems in this area.

I tried publishing again and of course I was only able to upload 30 more
secounds worth of files before FP stalled out once again.

Is it typical to limit outbound traffic via port 80? Reason I ask is that
these upload problems I'm having are happening from both my home PC (Cable
internet connection through local ISP) and my work PC (T3 connection via
different ISP).

Some do to prevent people from running web servers on their home machines.

However if you're having problems with two different ISPs then I would assume that it is not
the problem.

About all else I can think of is possibly a file naming folder naming issue.
Do you have any files or folders with spaces in their names??
Or are there any files with upper case and lower case letters??

If so, remove any spaces or replace them with underscores _ and name all files and folders
with lower case letters.

No folders with upper/lower case, but a LOT of folders and files with spaces
in the names/titles!!!!!!

I just ran a file/folder search on my webfiles... there are 44,000+ files
and/or folders with a space in the name!!!! I'm screwed... :-(

Cool... but how will FP know what files/folders got changed and then
subsequently update all the paths correctly?

Install Space Replacer as a FrontPage addin.
Open FrontPage and then open your web.
Click Tools > Addins > Space Replacer and run it.

Just to be safe, when it is done recalculate hyperlinks.

If it makes you feel any better Jim the author is a MSFT employee / programmer.

Well besides the nearly two hours of CPU time it took to run both the Case
Changer and the Space Replacer plugins my problem still remains. A server
admin on another web forum stated the following about GoDaddy hosting and my
problems with uploading.
--------------------------------------
Get a new host. Go-Daddy are fantastic for domains, but their hosting is
crap. Windows NT servers can only support at max IIS5, they dont come as
standard with web server software till service pack 6a.

The problem lies upon the server, rather than with your local machine.
