Do I have to have a printer connected to save as a .pdf

I want to save a Word for Mac document as a .pdf, but I get an error about not being connected to my printer. I'm using my Mac in Iraq, and I don't have a printer. Is there a way to convert to .pdf without having a printer connected?

I've used CuteFTP very successfully on a PC, but I wanted to test drive the native .pdf conversion on the Mac products -- which was a major selling point for me.

You do not need to have a printer physically connected & with most versions
of OS X you don't even need to have printer driver software installed to use
Word or create PDFs. [Going back a way you did have to have a driver just to
use Word.] The question is what exactly you're you're doing & what version
of Word/Office you have.

If you have Office 2008 & it's fully updated (12.2.3) you should be able to
go to File> Save As & select PDF from the list of 'Format:' choices.

With that or a different version you should also be able to use File> Print,
then click the PDF button at the bottom of the dialog & select Save PDF.

It's only if you do actually try to Print that you should see such a
message. Without more exact details about your Office & OS X versions & what
steps you're taking, though, it's difficult to provide more info.

I have a fully updated Word 2008, but when I try to save as .pdf, I get an error that it cannot find my driver. I've never had a printer hooked up to this Mac yet.

Have you also fully updated OS X? There's no printer installed in, or
connected to, this machine, and I save to PDF frequently.

Cheers
